It seems like almost every vegan blogger has talked about vegan cheese, so why not me? I brought home a big chub of Teese from AR 2008 and really enjoyed it (plus, the folks from Chicago Soy Dairy rock), but I have heard so much about the UK’s Cheezly, I just had to order some from VeganEssentials.com. I brought the pizza to a potluck and it was a hit! The thing I liked the most about this vegan cheese is that it melted and it actually tasted pretty good. It didn’t have that funky fake flavor that a lot of soy cheeses have. I give it a thumbs-up!

My only complaint is that when I’m eating at home I generally avoid sugar and the mozzarella style does have sugar in it for some reason. I have yet to try the white cheddar style (which doesn’t have sugar), but it’s waiting patiently for me in my fridge. Looking forward to trying that too. Any suggestions for a good use?

I also have some Teese nacho cheese sauce waiting to be eaten. No suggestions needed for that!

For this pizza I started with a Trader Joe’s whole grain pizza crust, spread some Rising Moon vegan pesto on the crust (which was very salty, but also quite tasty) grated half a block of Cheezly over the sauce, then added broccoli, sundried tomatoes, black olives and pine nuts. I also had a container of Chipotle Cayenne Parma ready to sprinkle on top after cooking. Yummy.

Think you have to give up pizza when you go vegan? Well, that’s just silly. Why would you have to do such a thing? Check out this great list of the top ten vegan-friendly pizzerias in the US. And if none of these places is near you, remember that you can always order pizza without cheese. (Just make sure the crust has no animal products.) It’s really good, I swear! I get pizza at a few of my local restaurants and order lots of yummy veggies. I usually end up with way more toppings anyway, which makes my cheese-eating companions envious.

When I prepare pizza at home, I use the cashew ricotta from Veganomicon, which my husband calls a “vegan miracle food.” (Actually, we use said cashew ricotta for everything from dip to sandwich spreads to casseroles to vegan sushi to quesadillas. The possibilities are endless.)

Ok, now I’m hungry. I think I’ll make myself a pizza with cashew ricotta (or the Teese Vegan Cheese I brought home from AR2008), olives, broccoli, artichoke hearts, garlic, fresh basil and Soysage. Mmmmmmm.
